What is an SREC

What is an SREC and why are they so valuable? An SREC or Solar Renewable Energy Certificate as they are called are actually traded , non-tangible solar energy commodities that show proof that someone or some entity has produced 1 megawatt-hour of electricity and that the electricity was generated from a renewable energy source like solar photo-voltaic panels. The price for an SREC varies from state to state and the prices in many states for an SREC is rising sharply as federal and state mandates for these solar renewable energy certificates increases.

So how does an SREC come into existence? When owners of solar systems start producing power many will register with an SREC tracking system or service within their state that handles to actual keeping and distribution of the created SREC by a solar power generation plant. Each month, the utility that handles the power distribution for the solar power generating plant will read their meter and then report the reading to the SREC tracking company so that the appropriate numbers of Solar Renewable Energy Certificates can be issued to the generation company or entity. These certificates are singular, numbered and finite in nature so that only one certificate can be issued and distributed for the 1 megawatt of power generated.

Utilities that are producing power from "dirty" means like coal and produce carbon emissions are required to buy, purchase, barter or obtain amounts of these SREC units to offset their dirty power production with SREC clean energy certificates. Here at Innovative Solar Systems, LLC we sell, design and install large commercial solar systems and will always have SREC bulk quantities for sale. We love signing long term contracts with clients that are willing to purchase anywhere from 1000 to 10,000 of our SREC certificates per year. Call Innovative Solar Systems, LLC today to tell us your SREC needs or to bid on SREC packages that are currently available.
